What's is the difference between fiscal stimulation and physical stimulation? A few extra dollars, perhaps. Viewership of adult-entertainment Websites has jumped since the start of the year, and particularly since May, when the first of the government's economic-stimulus checks were mailed.

 

In a recessionary environment, Internet content, especially social-networking sites, tends to thrive," says Marc Bell, CEO of Friendfinder Networks, a social-networking company whose properties include Websites as diverse as Penthouse.com and BigChurch.com. "It's much cheaper to spend time online than going out and buying dinner," says Bell, who notes it costs an average of only $25 a month to join the company's social-networking sites.


Traffic on Friendfinder Networks' largest Website, Adultfriendfinder.com , came off a peak in mid-May, but saw an upsurge in June, reaching more than 3% of Internet users that month, says third-party data collector Alexa.com. Indeed, visitors to the popular site, which advertises "Meet real sex partners tonight!," have doubled in number since the start of the year. Adultfriendfinder.com has jumped to No. 22 in Web popularity from No. 40 earlier this year. It now ranks just below weather.com.
