One of the most awkward things in a first date is starting a conversation. Isn't it excruciating when you think about the things you will talk about and things you should ask during the date? You think a dozen times before asking a question just to make sure that it is said right and is not offensive. You think of what topics to talk about to make sure that your date doesn't get bored. You also think twice about sharing a part of your life so as not to look too needy or too stiff. You also want to make sure that there are no uncomfortable and awkward moments between you two. But, when you get the ball rolling, it won't be as mind boggling anymore. Here are tips on what to talk about on the first date without over-thinking it and without being over-eager to talk about him/her or you.

 

Ask common questions. Keep in mind that you don't have to share your autobiography on the first date. Ask basic questions about the person. This will help you know the person better. For example, questions about their favorites like: What's your favorite food?,   Favorite color? Fave movie? Fave book?, and the questions go on and on. Answers to these questions will already give you a glimpse of what the person is like. This can also help you find something common about yourselves. Of course, when you find a common ground, the conversation will be a lot easier to talk and the flow will be better. You can immediately think of follow-up questions to ask. Sports, Movies, TV and Music are some of the most popular topics to talk about on the first date. They are very easy to relate to.

Share opinion. Besides talking about the favorites during a first date you can also talk about a bit about your family like your siblings or your cute nephew. You can also share something interesting about yourself or give a comment on the place you were at or what you were doing. For instance, "This place is awesome, I'm glad we went here" or something like "Bowling is so much fun!" Such comments can ease you up both and make a more comfortable set-up. Just make sure that you're not talking too much. Ask your date partner questions; let him or her share opinion to show that you are interested in listening.

Don't rant. Do not rant too much on your first date like how you hate your job or dislike a person – this is not a best topic to talk about on the first date. This will make you look snotty and bratty. Do not also talk about your wild nights and parties, this might turn your guy off. Also, do not talk about religion or politics. These are topics where people have very strong opinions about and you can't be sure that your date have the opposite opinion. You might just end up in a debate and taking a cab home by yourself.

Use pauses. Some people feeling uncomftable when your talk during a first date finishing with awkward pause. Sure it is better to avoid is such pauses but, the worst possible thing you can do is say or utter something every time there is a pause to fill it. This will just make you look desperate and too uneasy. Remember that you are selling yourself on the first date. Don't put yourself too much out there or your date might think that you are easy. If pause apperead take some rest to find another topic to talk about. Don't forget that your date partner also thinking how to break this pause so you can ask directly in joking manner: "Ok, tell me the next topic we can talk about during our unforgetable first date". Sometimes joke could save situation better than you can imagine.
 
The key to the first date is having a balanced conversation where you are both listening and speaking to each other. Show interest in what your date is talking about. Do not interrupt your partner when he is speaking. Be attentive when you are listening, this will show your respect to your date. Most importantly, have fun conversing with the person and things will come out naturally.
