What happens there is ... a relatively small pool of people, fairly stagnant continually enter into short term relationships with other members of the site, both of whom then return to the site. There is very little segmentation of user base other than age and some physical characteristics, so you waste a lot of time checking profiles for which there really isn't a mutually attraction. Segmentation is best achieved on life style with typically factors in education/income. Sounds snobbish, but it is reality MOST of the time. The male:female ratio is quite high, which by itself will keep away a lot of decent guys ... not worth the effort. There are a lot of time wasters and tire kickers on the site. A decent paid site, if there is such a thing, will most likely be better use of time, if looking for a more substantial relationship. However, if you're just dating, POF can work well, with some effort. Assuming, that's the environment in which you would choose to date. As a social site, there are far better ways of course, but it seems OK for that purpose. Still you have to be datable material or it won't work well for you. I think at least half the profiles (female/male) are just sticking up a profile, just to see.
