 Readwriteweb news portal today published article "Will The World End if Mainstream Users Ever Learn About The Browser's Address Bar?". This article is mainly about online dating site user behaviuor on the net. According to official Hitwise dating raking more than 10% of the searches for the top 10 dating search terms were URLs. They wonder what will happen if this trend will continue and mainstream users learned to navigate using the address bar instead of the search bar. This question is really interesting to discuss but mainly for webmasters, dating site owners and advertising managers in other industries. But I have found another problem which Hitwise dating market search share numbers revealed. The terms listed below are ranked volume of searches that successfully drove traffic to websites in Hitwise Lifestyle - Dating category for the 4 weeks ending with June 28, 2008 based on the US Internet usage. 
Marshall Kirkpatrick (author of this article) is absolutely right when claiming that "ad supported free site PlentyOfFish is trouncing everyone in the dating game and huge numbers of mainstream users are still afraid to navigate there directly using their browser's address bar". But he is not a dating industry specialist. When I took a look into this table I also noticed that this graphic shows another huge trend: 7 of 10 dating websites listed here are free dating websites! It means that at least 13.9% of US users were seeking free dating websites to join for.
I think these numbers are even higher because only top-10 was shown and no "free dating" quires were shown in this Hitwise Dating traffic data. It could mean that economical crisis in United States force singles to search for free dating websites and it makes them bigger, bigger and bigger. And they may kill dating monsters like Match.com soon if they will envolve some investment to make their site more attractive and user friendly.
