There are so many dating sites on the Web, that it is inevitable there are going to be fake profiles, some are placed on the site by the site owners to give the appearance that the site is popular, but what are the signs of a fake dating profile?
From time to time site owners may offer free access to their site in a bid to attract more members. The ‘visitors’ will often set up a fake dating profile. The signs of a fake dating profile to look for in this instance are:
- No photo
- One word answers
- Little or no personal information
Some of these people will be genuine visitors to the site checking it out; many could prove to be there with less than innocent motives. Site owners will also allow free access as it boosts their membership numbers, even if only for a day or two.
Probably the most common and most difficult fake profile is from the person who for whatever reason pretends to be something or someone they are not, maybe they do this for fun or maybe they lack self-confidence and hide behind the fake profile, hoping that once they find the right person for them, the other party will be happy to forgive them after actually meeting and getting to know them. These people can be very hard to spot but some of the signs of a fake dating profile in this instance include:
- An enhanced photo
- Another person’s photo who may be more appealing to the eye
- Profile reads like the perfect search engine profile for example, slim, tall, athletic, etc.
- Claims to be a professional or well educated person, with great job, etc.
Some of the signs of a fake dating profile are obvious, they tend to be from ‘escorts’ or porn sites and their profiles can be very explicit. Of course there are others from porn sites or ‘escorts’ who will play the ‘dating game’ in order to extract money from the innocent member. Where ever possible the site owners will remove these profiles.
There are also the con artists, who prowl the dating sites and other forums looking for people to rip off. The signs of their fake profiles can at first be difficult to spot, usually they ‘play the game’ for a while before springing their trap and asking for money to help out a relative who’s sick or for their own personal financial dilemma.
In this case the sign of a fake dating profile may include:
- Claiming to be a business person
- Smart business style photo
- Asking a lot of questions about your financial status and or job
Of course not everyone on dating sites are fakes or con artists, the majority are genuinely nice people, but as with everything there are always those who are out for their own ends, so it pays to be aware and look out for the signs of a fake dating profile.
